Lone Oak Coffee Company, roasted in Winchester and served at King Street Coffee in downtown Leesburg, took home two bronze medals from the prestigious Compak Golden Bean North America competition.
Lone Oak Coffee Company won bronze medals in the Espresso-Black and Filter-Pour Over categories. The event, held Sept. 14-17 in Portland, OR, is the world’s largest roasting competition, featuring roughly 300 roasters and more than 700 coffee entrants.
Local coffee fiend may know Lone Oak Coffee Company was previously called Hopscotch Coffee Roasters, co-founded by Sam Kayser, of Leesburg. The name was changed earlier this year when the business partnership, originally between Sam Kayser and two friends, expanded to include a fourth.
Although roasting is done out of Lone Oak’s Winchester storefront, Hopscotch Coffee & Records, Leesburg-based coffee connoisseurs can sample fresh coffee and craft beverages at the King Street Coffee storefront or, further west, at Veloville USA – Bicycles & Coffee in Purcellville.
Lone Oak Coffee Company was one of three roasters in Virginia to receive a mention at the competition, and the only one in Northern Virginia.
Of the recognition, Kayser, who’s been roasting for four years said: “The award is validation for me as a roaster, that the experimentation and studying I do is worthwhile and shows directly in the quality of coffee we produce. … I invest a lot of time and energy into dialing in my roast profiles; this award confirms that I am doing that correctly and that we are achieving our goal of being the best and most approachable coffee company in our area.”
Kayser invited caffeine fans to a special event at the Winchester location tomorrow. With the help of sponsor Fika Gatherings, Hopscotch Coffee & Records—at 22 W. Bond St.—will host a free screening of “The Coffee Man,” a documentary about 2015 World Barista Champion Sasa Sestic.
Doors open at 6 p.m. and the film begins at 7 p.m. Ahead of the screening, local performers Emy & Ethan will provide live music and free pastries and coffee will be served. Donations will be accepted for Coffee Kids, a charity that works to protect the future of coffee farming in countries throughout Latin America, Africa, and Asia.
